Week 6: The Zahir (post 2)

I liked this short story of the Zahir because I'm interested in mythical stories like this one. Jorge Borges stated that, "The Zahir stands for beings or things which have the terrible power to be unforgettable, and whose image eventually drives people mad." I liked this because he even said that the Zahir appeared to him in a twenty-centavo coin dated 1929 and the N T and 2 were scratched by a knife. The Zahir began to take over his sense of reality and his life, because all he thought about was the coin, he even dreamed one night that he was a pile of coins that was guarded by a griffin.

Later Borges went to see a psychiatrist where he admitted that he was tormented by insomnia, and was kept up at nights just thinking of the coin. The Zahir is so strong and powerful that Borges became consumed with the coin, and the coin became him. He was unable to forget the coin it filled his dreams and everyday actions. He was so obsessed with constantly thinking about the coin that he tried to look for a cure for his obsession. The Zahir traps anyone who looks at it and drains there life and sense of reality all into the Zahir so that all there life becomes is the Zahir. What he went through reminds me of someone being, dazed, confused and hypnotized by the Zahir. It even talks about how there can be many Zahirs in life that are in disguise and grab peoples attention and can consume there life, I believe that video games can be one.
